What is it?This book by Amber Massie-Blomfield explores the purpose of art in the modern world, It looks at different kinds of creative practices, and how they interconnect with activism, resistance, joy and hope. From protests against large infrastructure projects that would shrink natural ecosystems , to the struggles of keeping hope in war torn places, each example in the book tells a powerful story Why do I recommend it?Amber takes us through a captivating journey, anchoring each section of this book in specific times and places, to unpack the role of art.
What particularly resonated with me, especially in this era of intense disruption across the world, was the importance of art to help people imagine different futures, and feel a sense of hope and joy. Creatives have an opportunity to create spaces and experiences for others, to dream of a different tomorrow, and then maybe turn paralysis into action. The importance of solution focused stories in journalism has been supported by research, and it's interesting to think about how makers can play a part of creating new possibilities.
