What is it? Robin Wall Kimmerer is a scientist and botanist who is a member of the Potawatomi nation in Northern America. In The Serviceberry, she uses nature, and particularly serviceberries, to discuss how we could move away from scarcity and hoarding of resources, toward something rooted in generosity and gratitude. Why do I recommend it?
I often struggle with our current capitalist model and how it harms our environment, and other living things. Reading about alternative economies gives me much hope for our future on planet Earth. Robin Wall Kimmerer encourages us to think about how we can share with abundance in our small communities: sharing a cooked meal with a neighbour or extra produce from the garden fosters connection. It disrupts the commodification (i.e: putting a monetary value on all things) of our world, in favour of relations and generosity. With less than 150 pages, this book is a refreshing read, and left me very much inspired. If you read it, let me know what you think!
